While it could easily go smaller, that really shouldn't be the primary focus of the machine. I could actually see them giving up on the Mini. Everyone knows the desktop market sucks right now but you can't abandon it and remain a computer manufacture. Considering Apple resources this seems to be very much an example of corporate stupidity. This has the effect of lowering sales even more as things like Intel's NUC hit the market. People knock the lack of quad core but then ignore the vastly improved GPUs in these machines (which benefits far more users) without considering there value.īeyond all of that Apple seems to have a hard time putting engineering resources into a machine with poor sales. If that was the goal then vastly improving GPU performance at the expense of CPU cores makes a lot of sense. I think what Apple did or tried to do, was to design a machine that benefits the largest number of users possible while supporting only one logic board design. If you see the tear down, the chassis doesn't have much space not to mention they shoved what would be the power brick inside the chassis using up more space. Considering how long they have kept the design, doesn't seem like they will change it soon but if they do redesign the Mac Mini there might be a chance for a quad core option to appear.

They will only put Processors in the current Mac Mini if they fit the socket and chassis, they didn't update with Haswell i7 since the socket design was changed and wasn't able to fit inside the body (allegedly, several people have mentioned that the socket change was the main reason). It is a guess at this point as to which foot print they will go with and thus what processors they will support. In a nut shell Im expecting that if Apple does redesign the Mini's logic board, it will be a major redesign to support the latest chip set technologies from Intel. Beyond that DDR-4 will require a new board design anyways. Given that Apple has gotten a lot of grief over that lack of a quad core we may actually see this in a future machine. As such you can't say what will be possible in future Minis because Apple has different for prints to choose from. Will Apple strike back? Will they meet or beat the NUC? Will they even try? Will the NUC rule the mini-PC space?Īs Intel changes processor foot prints new motherboards will be required. I don't mind the Apple tax if the hardware is on par.Īpple could certainly match the specs, but this would be a huge reversal from what they did in the 2012 to 2014 downgrade where they crippled the Mini to the point that the 2012 model sell for more on Ebay than the 2014 models do. 8GB of RAM and spinning disk are not realistic in 2016. The Mini where odds are there will be soldered RAM and the i7 will be the high end option, so the new mini will price like the current one.

The $650 NUC with name brand RAM and a Samsung 950 PRO M.2 SSD. Major jumps in tech in every component - but nothing the Mini couldn't do.Ĭomparing the pricing. In my opinion the NUCs and this model specifically will be what the new Mini is compared to when(if) it arrives, so it's a place to start for what a 2016 Mini might look like inside.īoth have a SDXC slot, gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, mini DisplayPort 1.2, audio, IR sensor.

Lets compare the currently available i7 Apple Mac Mini vs the new Intel Skull Canyon NUC (NUC6i7KYK). I love my Mini, but I'm waiting for a refresh.
